Chasing UNESCO World Heritage Sites: The Ultimate Travel Bucket List
One of my favorite ways to choose where to travel is by looking at UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you've never heard of them before, you're in for a fun rabbit hole.
These are the places around the world that have been recognized as having "Outstanding Universal Value"—meaning they're so culturally or naturally significant that they belong to all of humanity, not just the country where they're located. From ancient cities and castles to coral reefs and national parks, these are the places worth protecting for generations to come.
What Exactly Is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
The World Heritage program began in 1972 as a way to protect the world's most important cultural and natural treasures. Today, there are more than 1,200 World Heritage Sites spread across nearly every corner of the globe, with new sites added each year.
To make the list, a destination has to meet at least one of ten selection criteria. Some are recognized for incredible architecture or history, while others are celebrated for breathtaking landscapes, unique ecosystems, or extraordinary biodiversity.
Why I Love Traveling to UNESCO Sites
There's something reassuring about knowing a place has been recognized as one of the world's most remarkable destinations.
When I visit a UNESCO site, I know I'm experiencing somewhere with a story—whether that's walking medieval streets, standing in an ancient archaeological site, hiking through untouched wilderness, or exploring a city that has shaped history.
They're often the places that make you slow down.
Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, you find yourself wandering a centuries-old neighborhood, admiring architecture, or sitting quietly in a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.
Those are the moments that stay with you.
Some of My Favorite UNESCO Destinations
One of the reasons I'm so excited about our upcoming Portugal family itinerary is because the country is filled with UNESCO treasures.
A few highlights include:
The historic center of Porto
The Monastery of the Hieronymites and Belém Tower in Lisbon
The Cultural Landscape of Sintra
The Alto Douro Wine Region
The University of Coimbra
Madeira's ancient laurel forests
Each offers something completely different—from colorful riverside cities and fairytale palaces to dramatic vineyards and lush mountain forests.
Of course, Portugal is just the beginning.
Some of the world's most famous UNESCO sites include:
Machu Picchu, Peru
The Great Wall of China
The Acropolis in Athens
The Galápagos Islands
Yellowstone National Park
The Taj Mahal
Petra, Jordan
Angkor, Cambodia
These are the destinations that often inspire us to book the trip we've always dreamed about.
A New Way to Build Your Bucket List
Next time you're planning a vacation, try searching the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Instead of asking, "Where should we go?" ask, "What incredible places has the world agreed are worth protecting forever?"
You may discover a destination you hadn't even considered.
That's the beauty of travel.
Sometimes the best adventures begin with curiosity.
My Challenge to You
How many UNESCO World Heritage Sites have you visited?
I have a long way to go, but every time I cross another one off the list, it reminds me why I love exploring the world in the first place.
Here's to many more stamps, stories, and unforgettable places.
Happy travels.
