Packing Cubes & REI: How We Know the Trip Is Getting Real

Sometimes the trip is already booked, but it hasn’t quite hit yet.

You’re not packed. You haven’t made a list. But then, as the trip gets closer, something shifts.

For me, it’s usually a visit to REI.

I’m wandering—maybe with the girls, maybe by myself—and I spot a bandana (do I need this? Yes!). Or a sunhat (of course). Or a new book (I’ll have time to read… yeah right).

And suddenly, somehow, the trip becomes real. I’m preparing.

I start picturing what I’ll wear, what I’ll bring, how it’ll all come together. The raincoat, the daypack, the snacks... the trip is on.

We love supporting small and local shops whenever we can, but REI has become our go-to for getting into travel mode. It’s not just the gear—it’s the ritual of walking through the store and starting to feel the adventure ahead.

Packing Cubes!

One thing we never leave behind? Packing cubes.

Every time we travel, I hand each of my girls a cube. It’s our way of kicking things off.
They always ask, “How many nights?” and start laying things out—clothes, swimsuits, pajamas, little piles on the floor. They’re focused. They’re into it. It’s honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole process.

It’s the signal: we’re going.

We’ve used packing cubes for everything—weekend getaways, camping trips, long international flights—and they make packing so much easier. Everyone knows where their stuff is. Everyone feels prepared.

These are the ones we love:

And, a few things we’re always glad we packed:

More Brands We Love

  • Dovetail Workwear — Work pants made by women, for women. Comfortable, durable, and they actually fit.

  • Cotopaxi — Colorful, thoughtful, and built for adventure. Their bags are fun, functional, and ethically made.

Getting ready to go can feel overwhelming, but it can also be a little spark of joy.
A walk through REI. A fresh stack of clothes. A kid zipping up their cube and asking, “Can I bring my book?”

It’s one of the best parts. The trip hasn't started yet, but your mind is already there.
